LifeNet® at the SETAC World Congress 2012

his year the theme of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) World Congress (held on the 20th – 24th of May in Berlin), will be “Securing a sustainable future: Integrating science, policy and people”. These considerations are entirely consistent with the successful management of malaria and for the first time in its history, the SETAC Congress will feature a study conducted on a long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito net (LLIN).

Bayer’s LifeNet is not only the world’s first polypropylene LLIN but it is also the first to have had a full environmental impact analysis conducted using the scientifically recognized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This comparative LCA was conducted in order to understand the full environmental impact of LifeNet (compared to polyethylene and polyester nets) from all stages related to the production of the nets through to their ultimate use and disposal.

The results of the LifeNet LCA will be officially presented at the Congress on the 23d of May by Quantis ; a company highly specialised in running LCA’s and eco-design.
